Preparing for Summer (Without Burning Out)
Summer is the perfect time to reset, refocus, and get ahead, but too many coaches use it to overwork instead of recharge. Great programs are built year-round, but that doesn’t mean you have to grind yourself into the ground. With the right plan, you can develop your players, staff, and program while still taking care of yourself.
Coaches, before I break down the key coaching points on the “Preparing for Summer,” I’ve got something valuable for you — free access to our exclusive Monday Morning Staff Meetings.
Every week at 7am, you'll get a focused agenda delivered straight to your inbox, packed with practical tips and strategies for player development, staff management, and building a winning program.

Player Development: Keep It Simple & Sustainable
You don’t need to run 6-hour practices or weekend clinics every week. Focus on clarity and consistency.
Key Idea:
Give players a self-guided summer routine that is short, focused, and flexible.
Action Step:
Build a 3-day-per-week skill plan with hitting, throwing, and strength work. Share it digitally or in a simple PDF. Check in once a week, and let them lead their growth.
Staff Development: Light Touch, Big Impact
Summer doesn’t need to be packed with meetings. Your staff will appreciate purposeful touchpoints over forced calendars.
Key Idea:
Keep your coaching staff connected without overwhelming their time.
Action Step:
Send one group message every two weeks: a short article, a drill breakdown, or a prompt to think ahead to next season. Let them reflect and respond when they’re ready.
Program Development: Prepare Without Overplanning
You don’t need to finalize every roster or every drill by July. Use summer to reflect, not obsess.
Key Idea:
Focus on reviewing what worked, what didn’t, and what needs upgrading.
Action Step:
Block off one hour per week to journal or brainstorm ideas on fundraising, culture, or facilities. Keep a running list. Let ideas breathe, then build it out when fall hits.
Head Coach Development: Take Care of You
Your impact is only as strong as your energy. Rest and self-care aren’t weaknesses, they’re prerequisites for success.
Key Idea:
Structure your summer so you can show up refreshed in the fall.
Action Step:
Unplug weekly. Prioritize sleep, family time, and hobbies. And don’t forget to hydrate.
Take Action Today:
Create a “Summer at a Glance” plan.
One page. Three sections: Player Plan, Staff Touchpoints, and Personal Reset Goals. Keep it in your phone or desk drawer.
Balance, not burnout, wins championships in the long run.
You don’t have to do it all this summer. But you do have to take care of what matters.
IT STARTS WITH YOU!
