I coached high school baseball in Texas for close to two decades and spent many hours attending clinics, researching the game, and conversing with the best coaches I could talk to. Along the way, I wrote notes and then organized them into binders, file folders, and USBs.
I learned a lot during my career. Today, I want to share my coaching journey with you so that you can skip the hard lessons and reap the benefits of my experience.
I share content on player, staff, and program development in my Monday Morning Staff Meeting newsletter. Click here to learn more and sign up.

Ultimate Coaching Checklist
I am a curator of multiple coaching resources for high school baseball coaches. The central question I always explored through my coaching journey is, "How can I make my team better?"
In other words, I spent two decades searching for the "best" way to coach and improve player, staff, and program development.
My writing focuses on topics like. . .
How to implement a complete baseball program
How to create consistent, actionable, repeatable, and exact coaching points to better develop my players, staff, and program.
How to accomplish this within specific time parameters, space, equipment, and staff
How to create better systems and processes to increase the rate of program growth
How to achieve results without stress from parents, administration, or yourself.
Most of all, I write about how high school baseball coaches can immediately put these concepts into their next practice.
Most of the concepts I write were not created on my own. These are ideas, tips, and strategies I have learned over my decades leading a high school team. Remember, I've spent decades researching the physical and mental approach to coaching baseball so that I can improve the players, my staff, and my program; but more importantly, improve myself.
I don't claim to have all the answers and I am still learning about the coaching profession, but I'm happy to share what I've discovered with you. My work isn't the only way to think about coaching high school baseball, but it's how I think about it. And, my process has been fruitful as I have won many championships and coaching awards. Hopefully, you'll find it useful as well.
You can start by reading my articles or check out my resources.
Played the game through college and got my first gig as a head coach right after graduation. I thought I knew the game, but I didn't know how to coach! No one taught me how and my team suffered.
Looking for a way to improve myself, I got lucky and worked one year under Edward "Hodie" Garcia who won a state championship and won everywhere he went. I spent that year working and learning all I could. I would keep a daily journal of what we did, why we did it, and the benefits of all we did.
My next head coaching gig was fruitful taking over a team winning no more than 4 games a year. In year one we went 10-10 and in year two we blew it open by winning 20+ games and a state ranking. Five years later we had a new baseball complex and the pride of small school baseball in the area.
After 5 years in a small, rural Texas high school I took over another low-performing school. This new school had triple the enrollment but lacked facilities and had fallen on hard times. In year one, we went from last to first place in the district earning multiple coaching awards and recognitions. By year three we had a new baseball complex that still exists today.
As a self-made head baseball coach, I would constantly research, attend clinics, and network to learn what the successful coaches from around Texas were doing.
Now, I write about my coaching journey sharing ideas, strategies, and resources you can use now and avoid the hard lessons I learned on my own.

I've coached football in Texas from the 7th grade "B" team to being a head football coach and athletic coordinator in Texas' highest division (6A). As a head football coach, I took the team from being one of the worst in Texas to ranking in the top 50% in 6A (if you know anything about Texas football, that was a huge accomplishment). I am now a high school assistant principal responsible for all 9th graders, campus safety, and attendance. Since taking this job I've learned that coaching prepared me for school administration. It's all about building relationships, setting expectations, and meeting standards. During my time as an assistant principal the campus attendance has increased by 6% in two years.
I love productivity and streamlining my day by keeping a bullet journal, analog calendar, and Google calendar.
