Staff Development: Demonstrate Leadership
Program Development: Paint the Big Picture
Quick Win for the Week: Create Your Own Portfolio
Intro: Don’t Just Apply—Stand Out
Whether you're looking to move programs, step up a level, or reset your career, finding a new high school coaching job isn't just about sending out resumes; it's about proving you're a builder. ADs and hiring committees want more than records and references. They want to know: Can you develop players? Can you lead a staff? Can you build a program?
The best way to show that? A strong resume backed by a powerful portfolio.
Player Development: Show How You Build Athletes
"You’re not just coaching talent—you’re developing it."
Your resume should include examples of how you’ve helped athletes improve year-over-year, not just all-conference honors. Highlight your systems for skill development, offseason planning, and individual growth.
Action Step: Add a one-page “Player Development Plan” to your portfolio that outlines your approach to skill work, game IQ, and building competitors.
Staff Development: Demonstrate Leadership
"A head coach builds a team behind the scenes."
Great leaders grow great assistants. Show how you’ve empowered your staff, delegated responsibilities, and created a unified voice for your program.
Action Step: Include a section in your portfolio titled “Staff Roles & Growth” showing how you manage responsibilities, develop coaches, and foster collaboration.
Program Development: Paint the Big Picture
"ADs don’t just hire a coach - they hire a vision."
Showcase how you’ve built a program over time. Fundraising, culture building, offseason structure, parent communication—all of it matters.
Action Step: Include 1–2 pages that outline your program culture, your 12-month calendar, and how you handle challenges like low numbers or budget limitations.
Closing: Be the Coach They Can’t Ignore
When you're serious about finding the right job, you need more than buzzwords. You need proof of process. A polished portfolio makes your resume come to life—and positions you as a difference-maker from day one.
Take the time now to craft your story. What you’ve built already is your best asset. Package it well, and you won’t just find the next job. You’ll earn it.
