Father’s Day Edition: Honoring the Impact of Great Dads
Celebrate more than baseball this week. In this special Father’s Day edition of the Monday Morning Staff Meeting, we explore simple ways to honor dads and mentors while developing your players, building your staff culture, and reinforcing what makes your program truly great: character, gratitude, and leadership.
Monday Morning Staff Meeting Agenda:
Player Development: Reflect and Message
Staff Development: Foster and Model
Program Development: Celebrate & Post
Head Coach Development: Lead Like a Father, Coach with Purpose
Father’s Day isn’t just a moment to celebrate our dads; it’s a powerful opportunity to reinforce the values of respect, gratitude, and mentorship within your team. Whether your players have strong father figures or find them through coaches and teammates, this weekend offers a meaningful chance to reflect and grow.
Here’s how you can turn Father’s Day into a moment of development for your players, staff, and program:
Player Development: Reflect and Message
"Character grows through gratitude."
Encourage your players to reflect on the positive male influences in their lives, whether it's their dad, grandpa, coach, or mentor. Gratitude fosters maturity, humility, and a broader perspective.
Action Step:
Have each player write a short note or text message to someone they admire as a father figure, thanking them for a life lesson or moment that mattered.
Staff Development: Foster and Model
"Model the values we want to see."
As coaches, you may already play the role of a father figure for many players. Father’s Day is a great reminder to check in on how your staff models patience, presence, and consistency.
Action Step:
Host a brief “coaches huddle” before practice this week to share one lesson you learned from a father figure and how it impacts the way you coach.
Program Development: Celebrate and Post
"Build a culture where family matters."
When your program celebrates more than just wins, you create something lasting. Highlighting holidays like Father’s Day shows your players you value life lessons as much as baseball.
Action Step:
Post a Father’s Day message on your program’s social media account. Include a picture of your team, past or present players with their dads, or a quote that honors the role of fathers in youth sports.
Head Coach Development: Lead Like a Father, Coach with Purpose
“The best coaches don’t just build players—they build people.”
Father’s Day is the perfect reminder that great coaching often mirrors great parenting: patience, accountability, love, and high expectations. As a head coach, you set the tone—not just for wins, but for the values your program reflects.
Action Step:
Write a short note to your coaching staff this week. Share how much you value their influence, both on and off the field. Then reflect personally: What would I want my own child to learn from a coach like me? Use the answer to reset your focus as a leader.
Bonus Idea:
Pick one young coach on your staff and offer 15 minutes of mentorship this week. One-on-one support goes a long way in developing a coaching "family" that lasts.
Take Action Today
"Celebrate the men who shape us."
Take 10 minutes during your next practice or meeting to ask players who they admire as a role model. You’ll not only learn more about your athletes, but you’ll reinforce a culture of respect and appreciation.
Final Thought
Strong programs don’t just teach baseball—they teach life. Father’s Day is a reminder that who we become off the field is just as important as what we do on it. Celebrate it well.
