Build Better Hitters This Week
"The goal isn’t just to make contact—it's to make contact with purpose."
Your team won’t hit their way to wins if their reps aren’t game-like. Tossing BP isn’t enough. If your hitters aren’t challenged, tracked, and coached with intent, they won’t develop confidence or consistency. High-quality hitting practices separate the good from the great—here’s how to get there.
Player Development: Train with Game-Like Intent
"Practice swings should look like game swings."
Too often, players take reps without focus. Emphasize drills that force decision-making, adjustability, and pressure. Use front toss with zones, breaking ball recognition, and situational hitting games. Track hard contact rates or quality at-bats to reinforce standards.
Key Idea:
Hitters don’t need more swings—they need better swings under pressure.
Action Step:
This week, assign each hitter to track their hard contact percentage in each cage session. Use this as a talking point during post-practice review.
Coach Development: Sharpen Your Hitting Plan
"You don’t need more drills—you need the right drills for the right players."
Audit your current hitting plan. Are your drills producing confident, situationally aware hitters? Are you coaching approach, contact point, and pitch selection with clarity? Tailor drills to age, skill level, and offensive philosophy.
Key Idea:
The best coaches don’t just run drills—they teach hitters how to think at the plate.
Action Step:
Pick one hitting drill this week to film and review with your staff. Discuss how it ties into your offensive goals and how you can coach it better.
Program Development: Create a Hitting Culture
"Winning teams know who they are at the plate."
Build a shared offensive identity: Are you gap-to-gap? Aggressive on fastballs early? Disciplined with two strikes? Post hitting charts, highlight the team hitting goals, and celebrate quality at-bats. Let every player know what “success” looks like for your program.
Key Idea:
Your culture should teach hitters how to compete, not just swing.
Action Step:
Hold a short hitters’ meeting this week. Define your team’s approach and 3 non-negotiables you expect every time a player steps in the box.
Take Action Today:
"Better swings start with better standards."
Choose one hitting drill this week to execute with full focus, measurable feedback, and situational context. Teach hitters to compete, not just hit.
Closing Motivation:
"Don’t let your hitters go through the motions."
Every swing in practice is a vote for how they’ll perform when it matters most. Build intention into every rep, coach every pitch with clarity, and set the tone for the offense you want to be.
