Big Gains Don’t Always Require Big Plans

Most people think you need an overhaul to improve — a total transformation. But the truth is, mini projects are often the secret to real growth. These short, focused, and purposeful tasks help players develop, staff align, and your program get better... without feeling overwhelmed.

Whether it’s the offseason, preseason, or summer downtime, mini projects help everyone move forward at their own pace, with clear direction.

Today's Monday Morning Staff Meeting Agenda:

  • Player Development: Personal Hitting Journal

  • Staff Development: Drill Toolbox Audit

  • Program Development: Culture Identity Poster

  • Head Coach Development: Set a Personal Project

Player Development: Personal Hitting Journal

Mini Project: Create a 1-page hitting tracker
Players should track 3 things:

  • How many swings did they take

  • One drill they focused on

  • One reflection from a rep that felt right (or wrong)

Why it works: It reinforces intentional practice and ownership. Takes 5 minutes a day, but adds long-term awareness and accountability.

Staff Development: Drill Toolbox Audit

Mini Project: Each coach updates or redesigns one drill

Choose a drill you ran last year.

Ask:

  • Did it produce the reps we wanted?

  • Was it game speed?

  • Can we tweak it to improve?

Why it works: Instead of reinventing your entire practice plan, you’re sharpening the tools you already use — and empowering your staff to lead it.

Program Development: Culture Identity Poster

Mini Project: Create a visual “Team Identity” poster
Use key phrases, values, or standards that define your team. Include 3–5 words that every player and coach will see daily next season. Print and hang it in the locker room, cage, dugout, or office.

Why it works: A clear message, visible every day, shapes how your team thinks, talks, and competes. Simple. Powerful. Consistent.

Take Care of the Head Coach: Set a Personal Project

Mini Project: Commit to one non-baseball goal this month
Ideas:

  • Read one leadership book

  • Organize your coaching notes into a portfolio

  • Build a practice plan bank

  • Take a weekly 1-hour walk with no phone

Why it works: You grow without burning out. Just like your team, small wins stack up over time.

Take Action Today

Pick one mini project from each category: player, staff, program, and set a start date this week.

Give yourself and your staff a 2-week window. At the end, evaluate how it helped.

You don’t need more time — you need more intention.

Mini projects create momentum that lasts into the next season, that"

  • Develope better players

  • Mentor better staff

  • Creating a better program
